The New Jersey Couples Therapy Training Program (NJCTTP), a division of the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, offers a unique integrated training program in psychodynamic-systems couples therapy including a thorough grounding in the theory of couples relationships from both family systems and diverse psychodynamic points of view. During the program, intensive classroom work and clinical supervision integrates readings with student s own clinical material. Each student may receive group and one-to-one supervision, as well as courses that encompass both theory and clinical training which are taught by senior faculty throughout the training period. Licensed clinicians can enroll in courses and workshops without deciding to become a full candidate of the program by submitting their contact information and a copy of their license and insurance information.

Students will have an opportunity to explore not only Psychodynamic and Family Systems perspectives on couples therapy, but will also learn the contributions of attachment theory, emotionally-focused couples therapy and Imago relationship therapy, among others. This comprehensiveness and eclecticism in our approach is what distinguishes us from other couples therapy training programs.

Contemporary models of couples therapy (e.g., Gottman, Johnson, and Hendrix) are incorporated into the training as applications which enable the clinician to arrive at an eclectic understanding of the couple as an entity, and how each partner has a separate internal world that impacts the whole of the couple.

Classes are offered in three flexible formats:

  • Weekly 12 session courses
  • Mini-courses: 5 sessions, 2 hours each (frequency to be determined by instructor)
  • Workshops: 1 day workshops (half day Friday, full day Saturday)

NJCTTP provides a culture and community for its students, graduates, and faculty through courses, meetings, workshops, presentations, personal connections, and social events. Candidates may also receive couples therapy referrals through our Psychotherapy Center by applying for therapist status with the PC . The New Jersey Couples Therapy Training Program offers individual and group supervision experiences in North, Central and Southern New Jersey.
