Certification Requirements
Program in Psychotherapy
Personal Psychoanalysis
175 hours total at a minimum frequency of twice weekly
Supervision
A total of 120 hours of supervision are required. This is accomplished in three blocks of 40 hours each. Two blocks may be with one supervisor, and can cover one or more cases. At least 1 block must be used for supervision of a single case that is seen by the candidate for a minimum of twice a week.
Third Year Exam (Written and Oral)
Candidates will answer questions in written form on the topic of psychodynamic psychotherapy in a take-home examination. They will also present a case to faculty in an oral portion of the exam in which the case presented is a patient who was treated for a minimum of 160 patient contact hours at a frequency of twice a week. The candidate will have received 80 hours of supervision on this case.
Program in Psychoanalysis
The Program in Psychoanalysis is a continuation of the Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. All requirements of the Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy must be completed before a candidate can move on into the fourth year.
Personal Psychoanalysis
400 hours total at a frequency of 3 times per week.
Note: Up to 50 hours from a previous 2/wk analysis with an approved analyst may be counted towards the 400 hours.
Supervision
120 more hours total. At least 80 of these hours of supervision must be by one or two supervisors of one 3/wk psychoanalytic case who is seen for a minimum of 240 hours continuously. The other 40 hour block must be with a different supervisor and can cover as many cases as the supervisor deems acceptable.
Case Presentation
Candidates will present a case in which the patient was treated at least three times weekly for a total of 240 continuous patient contact hours after the candidate has completed the 3rd Year Exam.
Evaluation
Each course requires attendance at all sessions, with a maximum of two absences.
Candidates will write a paper in each class. Candidates are evaluated by instructors at the completion of each course.
