Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
Comprehensive Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Advisors
When a candidate starts training, the candidate will be assigned an advisor for the duration of training. The advisor is there to guide the candidate through the training process, offering suggestions as to courses and supervisors, answering questions, and giving help when needed.

Personal Psychotherapy Requirements
The candidate must have a minimum of 175 hours total at a minimum frequency of twice weekly. Candidates choose their own psychoanalysts for their personal psychotherapy, who may be either CPPNJ faculty or other psychoanalyst approved by the CPPNJ Training Committee. These psychoanalysts must have a minimum of 2 years experience post certification as a psychoanalyst. Applicants already in treatment with an analyst who is not on the CPPNJ faculty and who wishes to continue with that analyst, must first seek approval from the CPPNJ Training Committee.

Supervision Requirements
A total of 120 hours of supervision are required. This is accomplished in three blocks of 40 hours each. Up to two blocks may be with the same supervisor and can cover one or more cases. Candidates are required to see one patient at a minimum of 2x/week for 80 hours and be supervised on that one patient for 40 hours.

Third Year Exam (Written and Oral)
The candidate will complete a comprehensive written take-home examination and present a case orally to a faculty committee.

Upon successful completion of coursework, the third year exam, and the required hours for supervision and personal psychoanalysis, the candidate will be awarded a certificate of completion in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
